Asset-selling problems with holding costs

چکیده

Sequential stochastic assignment problems now comprise a signi"cant literature that includes such important economical applications as the classical asset-selling problem and labor-market analysis (job search). In this type of problems there is a stream of bidders to whom several identical units at the disposal of the decisionmaker have to be sold. In this paper we incorporate holding costs to be incurred on the units (say assets) at hand into the classical model. Optimal strategies are de"ned as selling decision-rules which maximize the total expected net reward from the units. We take advantage of the speci"c structure o!ered by the framework of sequential stochastic assignment to get explicit results for the optimal strategies. It is further shown how to implement these results for important speci"c bid distributions. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The impact of short-selling constraints on financial market stability in a heterogeneous agents model

Recent turmoil on global financial markets has led to a discussion on which policy measures should or could be taken to stabilize financial markets. One such a measure that resurfaced is the imposition of short-selling constraints. It is conjectured that these shortselling constraints reduce speculative trading and thereby have the potential to stabilize volatile financial markets. The purpose ...

Technical Note - Optimal Dynamic Joint Inventory-Pricing Control for Multiplicative Demand with Fixed Order Costs and Lost Sales

This note studies the optimal dynamic decision-making problem for a retailer in a price-sensitive, multiplicative demand framework. Our model incorporates lost sales, holding cost, fixed and variable procurement costs, as well as salvage value. We characterize the structure of the retailer’s (discounted) expected profit-maximizing dynamic inventory policy for both finite and infinite selling ho...

Optimal Portfolio Management with Transactions Costs and Capital Gains Taxes

We examine the optimal trading strategy for an investment fund which in the absence of transactions costs would like to maintain assets in exogenously fixed proportions, e.g. 60/30/10 in stocks, bonds and cash. Transactions costs are assumed to be proportional, but may differ with buying and selling, and may include a (positive) capital gains tax component. We show that the optimal policy invol...

The Case of Chinese Students

This paper examines Chinese students’ risk attitude using buying and selling experiments with lotteries. We found that subjects were more risk averse in the buying experiment than in the selling experiment, suggesting the endowment effect. In the selling experiment, subjects were risk loving when there was a low win probability and risk averse with a high win probability, whereas they were risk...

A production model for a flexible production system and products with short selling season

We address a practical problem faced by many firms. The problem is deciding on the production levels for a product that has a very short selling season. The firm has a full period to produce and meet a lumpy demand which occurs at the end of the period. The product is no longer demanded after the end of the period. A constant production rate which minimizes average unit cost may increase holdin...
